Animatronic Control Systems

The Digital Brains!

Animatronic control systems are the brains behind the movements and actions of lifelike figures in theme parks, movies, and museums. Think of them as the digital puppeteers behind the scenes, orchestrating every gesture, blink, and speech of these characters. These systems can be as simple as an Arduino or as industrial grade as a WEIGL system. Of course the benefits of the cheapest to the most expensive animatronic control systems vary dramatically.

Controlling Servos, CAN motors, and more…

What can these systems control? On the most simple side are hobby servos. These can be as little as $10 USD. You do get what you pay for, though. Simple to program in an Arduino, but they will not last long. On the complete opposite side of the servo spectrum is a Harmonic Drive servo actuator. Those will be more in the $1,000 USD range. They are high quality MIL-spec rated servos that you will find in Disney animatronics such as the Avatar in the Na’vi River Journey Shaman.

How do they work?

The way animatronic control systems operate is fascinating. Sensors (IMUs, accelerometers, etc. etc.) play a crucial role in making the motions smooth. In some systems they detect changes in the environment or audience reactions in real-time, allowing these figures to respond accordingly. Imagine a dinosaur figure at a theme park that roars and moves its head as visitors approach. These systems’ software produce signals to synchronize movements, ensuring that each action looks natural and lifelike. This also applies to massive hydraulic dinos in the Jurassic Park movies!
