The Beginning: Atari
The founder of ATARI, Nolan Bushnell, created the original Chuck E. Cheese concept. In the early 1980s, video game arcades were struggling. Bushnell had the idea to combine pizza, games, and a live animatronic band to create a family entertainment experience. It worked extremely well — Chuck E. Cheese restaurants and their animatronics were franchised by the hundreds.
ShowBiz Pizza Place
Chuck E. Cheese faced strong competition from ShowBiz Pizza Place. Both companies thrived during the arcade boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s. ShowBiz was known for its high-quality animatronics. After Pizza Time Theatre (Chuck E. Cheese’s parent company) filed for bankruptcy in 1984, the two chains eventually merged. By 1990, most ShowBiz locations were converted to Chuck E. Cheese.
Chuck E. Cheese Today… But No More Animatronics
There are still over 600 Chuck E. Cheese locations worldwide, but the classic animatronic bands are mostly gone. Many fans miss the original shows and the nostalgic atmosphere they created.
We love classic animatronics and would be happy to bring that magic back for anyone who wants it.
