The robots ARE coming!!!
As artificial intelligence has quickly become very useful the Tesla Optimus robot has been rushed into being. In less than 2 years of development the Tesla engineers have made 3 full prototypes! The final 2 prototypes included 100% Tesla-designed all electric actuators. Already this robot has displayed to the public walking, incredible dexterity, and fluid body movements. The Tesla Optimus robot may already be working on the manufacturing floor next to humans…
Why are bipedal robots getting all the attention?
We humans, for many thousands of years, have designed our environment to suit us. That means stairs, countertops, lots of handles, chairs, stoves, hiking trails, and more were made for 2 legs and our body’s range of motion. Wheeled robots are fine, some even lock their wheels and can walk up stairs. Four legged robots like SPOT are very useful already in industrial environments and can handle not only stairs but extremely rough terrain. Why, then, are bipedal humanoid robots like the Tesla Optimus robot being rushed into production? To answer a simple question: what is the best type of robot that will emulate a human to be as productive as possible in an existing human environment? Bipedal humanoid.
Will robots take your job?
Maybe. Or maybe history will give us a hopeful glimpse into what is on the horizon. The first industrial robot was UNIMATE. It performed a very simple set of tasks that were very dangerous to humans. It did take those jobs from humans, which actually did make their lives better. Being displaced by new technology is not a new phenomenon is the point. Being displaced and put into a better job that is not as dirty, dangerous, or dull (the three D’s) will make humans more prosperous.
What do we do?
The Tesla Optimus robot is just one of dozens of current bipedal robots that are being seriously pushed into reality (not just for research). They are coming, and faster than most think. The human spirit of creativity in solving problems will always be here. If these robots present a problem we have confidence our species will find a solution. Hopefully that is not a bunker 3 meters below the ground…
